Every Unitarian Universalist congregation has its own ways of celebrating life and marking life transitions. We share our joys and sorrows, supporting one another through difficulty and success. From birth to death, our congregations help us live with deeper gratitude, greater connection, and more reverence for life.

At First Unitarian of Oklahoma City, we offer custom-made weddings, child dedications, and memorial services that honor the people involved by reflecting their unique personalities and values. Our minister, staff and lay leaders work closely with couples, families and loved ones to design these very special events.

Weddings –

Wedding services are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the love of two individuals who have chosen to come together in marriage. Because of our strong respect for each person’s beliefs and values, each wedding is custom-crafted with a couple to reflect their personalities and relationship.

Our minister a is a skilled officiant for interfaith weddings, atheist weddings, and weddings for those with Unitarian Universalism’s diverse beliefs. At First Unitarian, we joyfully bless same-sex and non-binary marriages. Unitarian Universalists affirm the inherent worth and dignity of all people and have a long history of promoting equal rights of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ).

Child Dedications –

First Unitarian offers child dedication ceremonies for infants and children.

Child dedication ceremonies are usually crafted by the parents, the minister, and religious educator working closely together. They will usually include the following elements:

    • A blessing for the new life of the child
    • An expression of the parent or parents’ hopes for the child
    • A promise by the congregation to support and nurture the child

Memorial Services and Funerals –

In Unitarian Universalist congregations, services to honor loved ones who have passed on are very personal occasions. These services are developed by the family of the deceased and the minister to specially honor the memory of that individual. The service might include the following elements:

    • A eulogy
    • Poems and other readings
    • Prayer or meditation
    • A time to remember the deceased with stories and memories
    • Hymn singing or other music
    • A time for personal reflection

Other Rites of Passage –

Our minister is happy to work with members and friends of the congregation to mourn, celebrate, honor, or recognize other critical life events which might include:

    • Scattering of ashes or memorial for a deceased animal companion
    • New home blessing
    • Blessing of a new animal companion
    • Blessing for gender transitioning
    • Divorce ceremony
    • Adoption ceremony
    • Croning ceremony
