On this day (“Decoration Day”), 150 years ago, Frederick Douglass gave a short speech entitled “The Unknown Loyal Dead” at Arlington National Cemetery. In that speech, Douglass pushed back against those who would make heroes of dead Confederate soldiers. He reminded his listeners that, instead of honoring the dead just because they have shown bravery in battle, it’s important to remember the cause for which they fought and died.

On this Sunday, we’ll use this great speech to weave together two important observances: Memorial Day and the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. We’ll hear testimonials from surviving victims of the massacre who went on to serve this country even though “my country ’tis of thee was shooting at ME!”
