“Cancel Culture” is a term that seems ubiquitous these days. It’s prominent in popular culture, in politics, and it comes up in countless arguments on social media. But this commonly used term means different things to different people. In fact, the very use of the term in some cases is its own form of canceling. What began as a tool for marginalized cultures to assert their values and voices in spaces where they had historically been silenced by much louder, more powerful voices, has been weaponized in multiple directions. How can we put a stop to shaming, blaming, and calling each other out and turn to accountability, curiosity, and calling each other in? How can we ensure that, as we move along the often rocky path toward greater equity, we make space for forgiveness?
