Social Justice Council
Our Mission Statement: The Social Justice Council of the First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City provides a focus for congregation members by leading ongoing community participation in projects and social action that promote equality and justice throughout the year, through advocacy, community organizing, and individual and collective volunteer activity to help members put their faith into action.
Who We Are: The Social Justice Council consists of a dedicated group of people from each of the major areas of social justice work who believe we can make a difference in our community:
- Accessibility and Inclusion
- Civic Engagement
- Community Partnership
- Green Sanctuary
- Radical Welcome
- Racial Equity
Change for Change: We gather applications for the Change for Change program from members of the congregation for nominations of charitable organizations to be chosen to receive one month’s plate collections. Through Change for Change we have supported Sunbeam Family Services, Heartline, Manos Juntas, Infant Crisis Services and Planned Parenthood, just to name a few. Change for Change form
Fundraising Events: In the Spring, the event varies and we use the money to support our work in the community. In January we have our Bohemian Café Night Party to fund microcredit banks for village cooperatives.
We have funded 13 micro-credit lending banks at $5,000 each, two each in Guatemala and Haiti, and one each in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Jordan, El Salvador, Zambia, and Mexico.
