In Oklahoma, and in other parts of the United States, teachers of language and literature, history, the arts, and philosophy have been accused of promulgating a “leftist agenda,” and texts by emerging, marginalized, and even canonical writers have been deemed to be “dangerous.” In many places, the humanities are threatened and yet they matter as much as ever, if not more. Besides teaching us about where humans have been, who we are, and who we are becoming, the humanities help to nurture empathy in young minds. In today’s service, using texts by Russian authors, we’ll explore the ways that reading literature can help us to become more empathetic.
