From two different cultures come two different concepts of mysterious powers. From Spain, especially from the writings of Federico Garcia Lorca, comes the idea of duende, a powerful force of passion and vulnerability, that seems to rise from the Earth itself and that is utterly dependent on an awareness of immanent death. From the Potawatomi Nation, a Native American people of the Great Plains, Upper Mississippi River, and Great Lakes region, comes the idea of “puhpowee,” “the force that causes mushrooms to push up from the Earth overnight,” the unseen energy that animates everything. How might these two different but related ideas help us to discover or rediscover our own passion, our own regenerative energy?
