Pleasure Activists and Love Evangelists

It isn’t MLK’s death day but his birthday that we celebrate each year, and yet, there is a tendency to focus on his martyrdom and on the trials and travails of civil rights leaders. We might think that MLK, Fannie Lou Hamer, Bayard Rustin, and other leaders were only ever deadly serious, were only ever suffering and struggling. But then we underestimate the importance of joy, music, love, laughter, and friendship when it comes to the fight for racial justice. Today, inspired by the work of activist Adrienne Maree Brown, we’ll consider the critical role of love and pleasure in activism and in the fight for justice.
